ACSMCase Study #1
Summary: The American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) is a national organization dedicated to improving surveying and mapping activities throughout the United States. Today, more than 7,000 surveyors, cartographers, geodesists, and spatial data information professionals from public and private sectors are members of this organization.

The challenge: Despite being headquartered close to Washington, D.C., ACSM did not partake in as many legislative functions as it hoped. Consequently, lawmakers, politicians, and decision-makers were neither aware of the existence of ACSM nor its activities. How could ACSM continue working on substantive matters that affect its members and establish a presence within the legislative sphere at the nation's capital at the same time?

Meeting the challenge: The C.L.A. Group became the new government affairs consultant to ACSM after going through an extensive RFP process. The firm began a slow and steady process that included setting up meetings with members of Congress and their staffs and attending other meetings with federal agency staff. Over time, ACSM's presence was no longer that of a stranger within the hallowed offices on Capitol Hill.

Positive results: Increased visibility among senators, members of Congress, and other federal officials has led to more opportunities for ACSM to get its voice heard. As a result, the direct impact on ACSM has been an increase in membership and strengthened bonds among members.
