Summary: The Colombian American Service Association (CASA)
is a non-profit organization established to assist Hispanic communities
throughout the United States. CASA provides services to Colombian
Americans in various disciplines, including: immigration counseling,
family relationships, economics and financial matters, cultural
activities, and educational initiatives.
The challenge: CASA became involved with
the politics of protecting Colombian nationals who fled their country
for fear of dying in the crossfire of drugs and guerrilla warfare.
The emotional ties to these nationals became so intense for CASA
that it played over and over in their hearts like a broken record.
How could CASA protect Colombian nationals from being deported from
the United States to go back into the hands of paramilitary gangs
whose threats of violence caused constant fear?
Meeting the challenge: The C.L.A. Group
began intensive research into this crisis and determined that the
best avenue to pursue would be to advocate for temporary protected
status (TPS) of Colombian nationals. Relying on its resources and
contacts in Congress, the firm engaged leaders of national Hispanic
groups into summit meetings with officials in the White House and
the Department of Justice. After working on this issue for three
years, The C.L.A. Group's efforts culminated in a meeting with President
George Bush.
Positive results: Strategic planning and
frequent meetings with members of Congress helped CASA stay on top
of the TPS battle and gain a respectable foothold with media outlets.
As a result, the direct impact on CASA has been an increase in awareness
of this issue on a national level and an increase in financial support
from private donors.
